Frequently Asked Questions
We have listed some of the most frequently asked questions below. However, if after reading these, you still have questions, please contact us directly.
Q1. How can I obtain a copy of the Primary Trauma Care Manual?
The PTC Manual is freely available to download. Click here to download the manual.
Q2. How can I obtain a copy of the Primary Trauma Care Instructor Manual?
The Instructor Manual is not designed as a stand-alone training aid and is presented as part of our Instructor training procedure. It is therefore restricted to authorised users. To obtain a copy of the Instructor Manual, please contact the PTCF Administrator for further information and guidance.
Q3. How can I become a PTC Instructor?
Anyone with a legitimate professional interest in trauma management can participate in a PTC course. Please note that PTC courses are not presented on a regular basis in all regions. In order to obtain information on courses being conducted in your region, first have a look at any courses listed online here. We would also recommend that you contact the Regional Representative for planned courses, confirmed dates and locations. If you are unable to find a Regional Representative, please contact the PTCF Administrator for further information and guidance.
Q4. How long is a PTC course?
A PTC course is normally five days: we refer to this as a Five Day Model, which is a proven structure. This entails an initial 2 day PTC Foundation Course followed by a 1 day Instructors Course and then a further 2 day Foundation Course presented by the newly trained Instructors under the supervision of the initial team.
Not everyone attends for the full five days – the standard Foundation Course lasts for two days only.
Q5. How can I obtain information about PTC’s activity in my country/region?
Information on PTC courses and activities can be found on our website here. For additional course information and specific local activities you may also wish to contact the Regional Representative directly or contact the PTCF Administrator.
Q6. How much does it cost to attend a PTC course?
All courses are provided free of charge. However, participants are normally invited to make a donation towards the cost of maintaining PTC training programmes. We do not want this to be a barrier to anyone, so please do feel free to discuss it with your course organiser or contact the PTCF Administrator for further information and guidance.
Q7. Can I utilise PTC’s training materials to design/develop a trauma course in my hospital?
PTC courses are adaptable and can be developed alongside specific trauma management training at district hospital level. A request should be made directly to a Regional Representative or contact the PTCF Administrator, giving details of the proposed training, location and your full contact information. Your request will be considered and you will be notified by email once a decision is made.
It should be noted however, that all PTC material is copyrighted and remains the property of the PTC Foundation. We ask that any PTC training material used should be attributed to the organisation and additionally we should receive a copy of any reports, if applicable. The text of PTC training manuals and instruction slides must not be changed or amended in any way.
Q8. What do I have to do to organise a PTC course in my country?
The most important requirement for a PTC course is a voluntary request from a “host” country. This can be from an anaesthetic, surgical or similar medical body. A formal request should be made to PTC head office who will assist in the coordination process along with an appointed course director and local coordinator who is normally the person who requested the course. Initially, a convenient date should be established for the proposed course followed by guidance on who to invite and logistical arrangements. Please note the following important information:
All PTC courses are run by individuals who take full responsibility for their own actions. The PTC Foundation cannot be held responsible or liable for any action or accidents by any individual either teaching or attending any PTC course or PTC instructor course. The views expressed by individual instructors are not necessarily those of the PTC Foundation.
All individuals undertaking any travel on behalf of the PTC Foundation do so at their own risk and they need to take steps themselves to insure against all eventualities. The PTC Foundation cannot be held responsible for any liability arising from any event during a PTC course and instructors need to be aware that PTC courses are sometimes held in dangerous locations.
All PTC material is copyrighted and remains the property of the PTC Foundation. Slides, acetates or other presentation aids should only be used for PTC courses and with the express permission of the Foundation.
The PTC slides are numbered. The text of PTC and PTC Instructor slides MUST NOT BE CHANGED. However, pictures or similar supporting illustrations may be added between the slides if they support the slides relevantly. If the PTC slide-set is distributed this must be in the original PTC format with no changes.
